Stonechurch really did impress on our last Niagara outing. While none of us were overly familiar with their wines, and the Riesling was selected more to have something to taste than anything else, it was a moment of happy serendipity. The Stonechurch 2003 Riesling turned out not only to be passable, but in fact was the top white wine pick for Michelle and I from the entire day’s worth of sipping.
It smelled absolutely delicious, built on a strong citrus backbone with a crisp apple accompaniment rather like cider that was saved from being harsh by a balancing bit of Bosc pear (say that three times fast). At a sugar code of (2), it was slightly sweet, but unlike the Relax Riesling from Schmitt-Söhne, very citrusy and refreshing on the palate.
This one won the bronze medal at the Cellars of the World competition for good reason, it was probably the best riesling we’ve ever had. Top notch Niagara wine, highly recommended.
